Rather, the strap of the bag failed, dumping it onto the pavement.
Amazingly, it still works. Well done Apple!
However, there's another impressive dent, and the corner that hit the ground seems to have a small stone embedded in it:

I once saw (and was loaned) a 17" Powerbook that had been (allegedly) attacked by a cat on several occasions. It had a key missing. It had several large dents around the screen and on the main casing and the magnetic clippy thing no longer worked. It was in a really bad state and looked like it had been dropped more than several times.
The machine itself was fine.
