From the A46

Find the A46. It runs through Cheltenham and Stroud and places like that. We're very near Gloucester, so find that on your route map and go south-east to find the A46 and Cranham.

Our turning is signposted to Sheepscombe; from the north, coming down the A46, it's the first sign to Sheepscombe you see, after the sign for Cranham and before the Royal William.

Coming from the south, it's the turning for Sheepscombe just after the Royal William.

Here is a map showing the way from the Royal William to us.

Once you're turned off of the A46, continue until the road branches, where you take the left branch (signposted Cranham). After that, just keep heading downhill until you get to the bottom of the valley, then turn right into our driveway.

Do not follow signs to Cranham. We live on the outskirts of the village, and if you follow signs to Cranham, you will end up in the village, which is no good.

From the A417

The A417 heads up to Gloucester at one end, and heading southwards, turns into the A419 and goes to Swindon and the M4. It's to the East of us.

Leave the A417 at Birdlip, which is signposted for Birdlip and for a scenic route to a viewpoint (one of those little brown signs).

Here is a map showing the way from Birdlip to us.

Drive through Birdlip, following the road round to the right when you get into the center of the village, but soon after that you turn left (with a pub on your right and a big stone wall on your left) rather than disappear down a very, very, steep hill.

Follow the road through the woods, and take the second right, which is a crossroads signposted for Cranham.

Follow the road into Cranham village, and start going down the hill. Beware of cars coming up towards you. Once in the village, ignore the first left turn, but take the second one - you can tell which one it is (and distinguish it from the many driveways) by the presence of the mirror on the right hand side of the road showing you up the road you're turning into; also, it's signposted for Sheepscombe.

Drive across the common, past the school and the church on your left, until you get to a branch in the road after the national speed limit sign. Take the left hand branch. You soon come to another junction, where you take the right hand branch and go down the hill, whereupon you soon come to the bottom of the valley. Turn left into our driveway!

By public transport

The number 46 bus runs from the Royal William pub, which is within walking distance of us, to Cheltenham in the North and Stroud in the South. Stroud is the best place for trains to and from London.

We can probably pick visitors up from Stroud Station - it's just 15 minutes by car - or you can get a taxi; we recommend Ted's Cabs on 01452 813 599 since they usually know where "Suttons Mill, Cranham" is. Otherwise, show them a printout of the "From the A46" driving instructions above.

The busses run once an hour from Stroud - the number 46 bus timetable gives more details. Take the bus to the Royal William - ask the friendly locals and/or bus driver to help you make sure you get off at the right place. From the Royal William, follow the "From the A46" driving instructions above.

If you get stuck - our phone numbers are 07974 437 842 (Alaric) and 07900 823 239 (Sarah)
