The implementation of Web applications (by )

I first started Web app development in PHP in 1998. Although PHP as a programming language has many, many, shortfalls, the fundamental model - take an HTML file, change its file extension to bring it to the attention of the PHP module, then stick bits of code in where needed - was great... for the kinds of pages that are the results of simple GET requests; idempotent data-gathering. Code that's purely functional, at least macroscopically.

However, once you started bringing forms beyond search boxes into the mix, things started to go downhill. This first struck me when I had to develop a series of pages that allowed people to register domain names. At the time, this required gathering four sets of contact details (legal registrant, administrative contact, billing contact, and technical contact), along with some technical details. Since, most of the time, all of these sets of contact details would be one and the same, it was decided that we'd start off with a page with a form for the legal registrant's details, and this would have a "Next" button leading to a page with a form for the administrative contact's details, plus a button that would invoke Javascript to fill the form with the legal registrant's details so they could be submitted as-is or modified slightly (perhaps a different person's name, at the same company and postal address), then submitted with a "Next" button that led to the next set of contact details, this time with buttons to prefill with the legal registrant's details or, if they differed, the administrative contact's details. And so on.

And, of course, there was validation; any of these "Next" buttons might well instead bring you back to the page you just came from, with an error flagged, rather than to the next page.

Sarah not happy :'( (by )

We've just come back from a morning of drs appointments followed by hospital visit for x-rays - sigh. I think my body has a secret conspiricy to make my life stupid!

Ok - its not serious at least so I should be greatful. At the moment there are three senarios

1)It is something like I had in the pregnancy - hence x-rays but this is unlikely as the dr couldnt here and thing and I have no temperature or anything like that.

2)I have suddenly developed asthma at 25

3)My body is confussed becuase I have had the flue/chest infection that was bad but gone now leaving bruising and inflammation of my wind pipes. So my body would be trying to cough up irritation that is no longer there but in doing so cuases inflammation etc... which in turn agravates things.

Number three is the most likely - this is poo as it means there is no treatment and its up to my body to sort things out which is of course part of the problem 🙁 No antibiotics or antivirals will work as there is no infection. No cough mixture will work, but I shouldnt worry about the blood unless the amount of it I cough up increases - Oh and of course theres the whole weight lose thing - have I lost weight drastically recently = yes of course I have thats what I'm supposed to be doing!!!!

But your cloths arent suddenly hanging off of you are they?

Yes - cos I've gone down several dress sizes - I assumed it was the exercises I was doing 🙁 But it could apparently be to do with the cough.

So once again I await test results - once again it looks like I have something - minorally debillitating that is untreatable and once again it looks like its due the propensity of my stupid body to inflame things!

Lets see:

An inflamation disorder of some sort affects my digestive track Inflamation around my back injury is causing most of the pain and problems Cant remember which way round this goes but problems with immune system = swollen spleen or visa versa 🙁 And now breathing problems becuase of inflamation in me tubes 🙁

Great I knwo what this means - this means that I'm gonna get arthritis in the long run 🙁

Oh well no point worrying about it until the tests come back.

Sorry to be winging about the health issues once again - just a bit fed up.

Hope for the Future (by )

I just thought I'd mention this as I thought it was rather sweet!

Today a little boy probably about 8 (well cub age...) came up to me and asked if I wanted his Happy Meal toy for my baby - I said she'd love it but didnt he want it - he said that he already had that toy and so did his sister so he had no use for it and thought the baby would like it. His mother seemed to be happy with this so I thanked him lots and let him give Jean the strange fog creature with teeth (I'm pretty sure frogs dont have teeth!).

He seemed really happy especially when Jean started playing with the thing - ok well she picked it up and flayaled it a bit.
