Manky Bites Got Mankier (by )

Friday the bites that Al had had the 'I can't walk' reaction too seemed to be under control if he took antihystimine to stop his calfs swelling but they started to get red swellings around them. We thought they might be a bit infected from scratching or something and went off for our busy weekend of travel putting savlon on them. Saturday though Al wouldn't dance at the wedding as the legs felt 'heavy' and they didn't look too good and I was worried they were getting bigger so I drew a line around one of the areas. Then today (Sunday) on the way home from London Al started to complain that there were shooting pains in his legs. This is what they looked like when we got home.

Alaric's legs with infected bites

They are so hot and mottled and have yellow/white rings in the middle of them.

Manky insect bite

So I have sent him off to A&E on his own as I am here with kids. I am quiet worried about him. It may well be an over reaction on my part but I really think he needs antibiotics.

We don't know - we've been camping and hiking through grass and woodlands the last couple of weeks so they could be but they could be just about any insect including horse fly bites which can be very nasty - he's been seen by Triage and is awaiting more prodding and poking

Well, I was sat for three hours in A&E while they dealt with a lot of overheated children last night (I was understandably a lower priority!), then a doctor took a look at me. He was mystified - he said it didn't really match the symptoms of anything, but they took blood and urine samples to try and narrow it down and sent me home, as they could rule out the immediately life-threatening options. I'm now awaiting an emergency appointment with a GP to try and see what can be done in the long term!

Look more like spider bites - they're not tick bites - ticks will cling on too, and you'll have to remove them (before the burrow in in a week or two). (i get ticks all the time..)

Hi there. I have the same on my leg. Did you find out what caused it in the end?

  • By sarah, Mon 17th Mar 2014 @ 8:50 am

An allergic reaction to bites - probably spider bites (the reaction is rarer than bee sting allergy) or possibly snake bites - they couldn't tell. It was itchy so then got infected from where he had scratched them. He needed several rounds of antibiotics and allergy tablets. The trouble he had walking was due to the on going allergic reaction to the bites making his legs swell. If you have something like it I'd suggest a trip to the Drs.

It took about three months to entirely clear up.

    Hope that's useful.

Hi. I have had the same in the past as I work a lot in the outdoors so have had it a few times. It's from a small insect that lives in and near brambles and nettles. I can't count the times I have been bitten but I have never seem them. A colleague says its a small fly. Symptoms I have had at the time of bite feels like a nettle sting then from the next day swelling, inflamed, itchy and blood comes to the surface like a love bite look. After a week or 2 almost gone. Is that the same for you guys?? Hope all is well now.

Thanks Jon - it took a couple of months but is all cleared up now and looks to have been an allergic reaction as to keep his legs from swelling Alaric had to continually take antihistamines. There was also an infection possibly from scratching which took a couple of sets of antibiotics but it left little scaring. Still not entirely sure what bit him and both spiders and snakes were suggested.
