Apps as containers (by )

As I have mentioned before, it annoys me that many applications try (subtly or otherwise) to appear as the 'containers' of your data; they are both editors of a particular type of object, and a browsing/management interface for that type of object. The insidiously widespread case being applications that have 'Open' and 'Save As' menu items that pop up mini filesystem browsers, only showing the types of documents that application cares about and hiding others.

Fireworks (by )

Last night, we went up to Barrow Wake Viewpoint, which looks out over Gloucester from a hill, to see all the fireworks displays (public and private!) going on over the city. Jean loved it, and called them "pretties". There were a lot of families up there - somebody even had a barbecue going...

Then the next morning, the air outside at home smelt crisply of nitrate combustion products 🙂

Good News, Bad News (by )

Mum's dressings came off today which was good, I got the dates wronge for seeing the consultant last week for my hernia which is very bad and they've given mum a wheelchair as she is unable to use her walking stick at the moment - the arm she rests her weight on is the one that is weakened due to lymph node removal etc...

Oh and I'm in a foul mood as my darling duaghter descided to extrude a suasage of food from her mouth at the breakfast table and in trying to stop it falling onto the floor my cup of freshly made tea with hot goats milk in it, landed straight into my lap. Still it could have been worse it could have landed in Jean's lap. I'm still not very happy with her as it still hurts. And yes I know it should have gone straight under cold water but that wasn't very practical when its your lap and you've got a two year old.

Sigh - she has turned into a MONSTER! Apparently this is normal behaviour 🙁

Hyper This Time :( (by )

Poor Dad - the day after he had the massive hypo he forgot to take his meds - I had reminded him and sent him off to have them but something went ary on route namely he got into a conversation with Barbara. Unfortunatly becuase I'd sent him off to have the his injection and stuff I assumed that it was all ok.

Now I've never actually seen the affects of too high sugar in him though I seen them with my mum but some how this seemed completely different - maybe becuase it was really fast acting? I didn't twig that he was drinking too much though I know thats a bad sign, mainly becuase I have a cold and I was really thirsty myself. By the time we realised what was wrong we where a fair distance from the house and getting back was painful for dad as his mouth dried out too the extent that his lips where sticking to his teeth. We had to stop and get him a drink so that he could concentrate on driving.

This was bad ontop of the low sugar and hypo the day before and as a result the next day - Saturday he was helping me move stuff (which I can't do by myself becuase of the hernia and my back) when he suddenly started clutching at his chest and gritting his teeth. He had also gone a bit grey - now as alot of you know he had a heart attack about 6 weeks before mine and Alaric's wedding which I didn't see becuase I was working at the Union that night but he was acting like my brother had said he acted then - even down to the fact he was saying he was fine! Also he was exhibating the sort of signs my first aid training has down as heart attack - but it wasn't bad and he was talking to me and he knows his own history and stuff and I knew he had the Nitrolingal spray (Al always teases him that its a high explosive! - it being nitroglycerine!).

Never the less I was still panicing and phoning people to ask advise - I didn't want to call an ambulance for nothing and I also did not want to wait until things got bad - if thats what they where going to do.

But he seemed to be getting better and after about 40 minutes was pretty much back to normal bar being tired so he went for a rest whilst I cooked dinner.

I think in future he is going to have to leave the meds where ever we are having breakfast which is what he's done the previous times he's stayed - this time they where in the room he was staying in which made it easy to forget also he was very stressed out becuase of mum's opp which is one of the reasons he was down here the later half of this week - I was supposed to be looking after him.

I don't think I've done a very good job 🙁

Russet Apple Harvest (by )

Russet Apple Tree

Last Sunday me and dad decided to start the russet apple harvest as Barbara had been asking for help with it and had already set up the dam in the stream to try and catch all the errant apples that fall due to the wind ect... For those that don't know the apple tree is on the other side of the stream just behind where the green house is (the green house is attatched to the building we live in (when its not flooded that is!).

The hard frosts have already reached our little valley so it is time for lots of things to be harvested at the moment!

We found a ladder and gingerlly made our way across to the otherside of the stream, we decided to jump it rather than use the ladder as a bridge as we noticed it had a rather large crack in it that would not take the strain but would be fine if the ladder were used as an actuall ladder. The back here was quiet slippery and muddy as Albert (Barbaras garderner) has been clearing it of all the scrubby grass in order to put more ornimental things there. But we made it over with no ill effects but than I realised that we had nothing to put the fruit in so had to recross the stream to get some bags!

Comedy ladder moment anyone?

hmmm not sure about this

Across the stream

When I returned Barbara has joined in the fun and was in the middle of donning wellies and get the 'cherry picker' now the only cherry pickers I've ever seen are those little crain things with a basket for humans that window cleaners sometimes use, I've also seen council employees use them to change light bulbs in displays in town centres and that type of thing - what Barbara came back with was something akin to what I would call a 'pruner' it was like a pair of shears on the end of a long poll with wires running down the poll so that you can move something your end and make the shears at the other end work!

Equiped with this dad scaled the ladder with much protest as a) he is scared of hieghts but was too proud to let me do it and b) there happens to be a couple of roses trained up the tree which did their best to scratch him to pieces!

Ferfer up a tree!

Once in position I handed the cherry picker to him which he wedge by a joint in the trees branches and begain shaking. Nothing happened, no apples fell - all except one apple - which thanks to dads and mine combine bad luck feilds proceeded to hit him on the head! I'm afraid I couldn't stop laughing when I realised that the only apple to actually have fallen off the tree had managed to hit him right on the nogging!

Anyway with a bit of direction from Barbara he soon had the apples tumbling into the stream where they where neatly cuaght in Barbaras apple trap (an old wrought iron fire grate/basket thing with some chicken wire) where she was waiting eagily to extract them with a rake. I mean while I was creeping around the bank trying to retrieve all those that hadn't made it into the stream - I was trying to do this mid strokes so as not to be showered by apples. However dad decided that he needed to extract revenge for my laughter and shook knowing I was under the tree and then laughed like a drain when an apple ricochette off my back side into the water - Barbara then commented that at least that wouldnt hurt as much as one hitting you on the head :/

Anyway we got a good big basket full and the trees still laddened with fruit!
